Mumbai, April 20: Smart Commute Foundation (SCF) has the backing and support from the concerned government, civic and police authorities for their initiatives in promoting cycling among the citizens of the city. Since its inception in 2012, SCF has always been striving hard and initiating various programs with the sole focus of targeting a fit, green, clean, smart and happy city. The Foundation wants to encourage the widespread adoption of cycling as a means of sustainable transportation and as a means of daily commute and as a way of life.
In its endeavour to achieve its objectives, the SCF is now all geared up to organise, the One For The World Commute Challenge from World Earth Day to World Environment Day, which is set to kick off from 22nd April 2018 to June 3rd 2018. This was announced by Firoza Suresh, founder of SCF at a press conference on Friday.
“We have to create an awareness about Cycling as a means of daily commute. People need to keep a hold of something and let it happen. Who imagined people would wake up at 5 O’clock and start running, but now it’s happening. I am confident that the same can be done with cycling,” Firoza told media persons.
“Our goal is to encourage, facilitate, train and organise events/programs that help reduce the carbon footprints and create a ripple effect through having a positive impact on health, wellness, morale, productivity and traffic congestion,” she further stated.
The SCF is working closely with civic and other government authorities to put in place the infrastructure. “The authorities are listening to us and prepared to support our initiatives. They are ready to create programmes and also about the road safety concerns. We are also taking the programmes to various corporate entities, educational institutions and primarily, the citizens of Mumbai.”
SCF feels that if the citizens adopt their plans it would be environmental friendly as it would improve air pollution, aave burning of fuel, reducing traffic congestion, and reduce carbon emissions.
The foundation aspire to target over 20% urban India to adopt cycling as a way of life by 2030. It is also keen to impact a shift in new infrastructure priorities towards non-motorised transportation.

Mumbai, April 25, 2017: Bollywood actress Diana Penty engaged with culture enthusiasts Taaniko and Vienna Nordstrom, from New Zealand Company - Soldiers Rd Portraits - at an event in Mumbai today.

The Nordstrom duo introduced the audience to New Zealand’s Maori culture through interesting activities, while Diana expressed her curiosity for the diverse culture and its importance and significance.

With Indian travellers showing an increased interest in culturally immersive getaways, Tourism New Zealand in India curated the event to raise awareness about the destination, and showcase the country’s other offerings that go beyond beautiful landscapes and adventure experiences.

Taaniko and Vienna Nordstrom, through a presentation and engaging activities highlighted New Zealand’s Maori culture and customs, in particular food, fashion, history, art and music.

The duo, with their skills, meticulously transformed Diana Penty in the style of a Maori ancestor, wearing a blend of traditional Maori and European clothing, and a temporary facial tattoo, also known as kirituhi. The experience is designed to emulate a portrait of a Maori ancestor and inspire and educate guests about Maori culture.

Talking about her experience during the event, Diana Penty said, “Being an Indian, culture is very close to me and I was delighted to learn the similarities we share with the people of New Zealand. The transformation in the style of a Maori ancestor was an extraordinary and inspiring experience, it makes you realise that there is so much to New Zealand to explore besides its natural beauty.”

Vienna Nordstrom from Soldiers Road, said “We have witnessed that cultural experiences are sought after by an increasing number of Indian travellers while considering a travel destination. It gives us great pleasure to introduce and build awareness about New Zealand’s rich and incredible Maori culture among Indian travellers. We are a culturally driven nation and have a lot to offer, above and beyond the stunning landscapes that we are known for.”

Tourism New Zealand Regional Manager for South and South-East Asia, Steven Dixon said the event was also a great opportunity to highlight the similarities between our two countries.

“Where people in India have the highest regard for guests and value hospitality, in New Zealand culture too, we believe in the concept of Manaakitanga. It inspires the way in which travellers are made to feel welcome when visiting New Zealand. For New Zealand’s Māori, being hospitable and looking after visitors and caring about their well-being is an intrinsic part of their culture.”

30-year-old from Kashmir wins Most Promising Individual of Martha Farrell Award for Excellence in Women’s Empowerment

Resource and Support Center for Development (RSCD) from Maharashtra wins the Best Organization for Gender Equality category

New Delhi, 25 April 2018: The Martha Farrell Awards for Excellence in Women’s Empowerment were first awarded in 2017. Instituted in the memory of Dr. Martha Farrell, a prominent activist for gender equality and women’s empowerment, the Award is co-sponsored by Rizwan Adatia Foundation (RAF) and Participatory Research in Asia (PRIA), and supported by Martha Farrell Foundation (MFF). Martha was killed in Kabul (Afghanistan) in a terrorist attack in 2015, while leading a gender training workshop for the Aga Khan Foundation. The Martha Farrell Award for Excellence in Women’s Empowerment takes forward her ideals and principles.
The Award gives a prize money of INR 1,50,000 to each of the winners in two categories.
  • Most Promising Individual (any gender) who has worked on promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment consistently, and
  • Best Organization for Gender Equality, which has been implementing practices to create gender sensitive and secure workplaces
This year’s Most Promising Individual Award has been won by Nadiya Shafi from a pool of 82 nominated entries. A Srinagar resident, Nadiya is a video reporter, associated with the Kashmir Unheard Project and Video Volunteers. With the Project from 2014, after completing her Master’s in Social Work from the University of Kashmir, Nadiya has been defying patriarchal norms in a society where domestic & sexual violence are more the norm than exception. Nadiya has been leading gender discussions clubs in her hometown. . The club comprises students, housewives, labourers, artisans, farmers – citizens of Srinagar  – and engages them in discussions about sexuality, patriarchy and gender inequality. She is currently in the process of expanding these clubs to the Shopian & Phulwama districts of Southern Kashmir, which are some of the most disturbed areas of the decades-long armed & cross-border conflicts.
Learning that she had won the award, Nadiya said, “It is indeed an honour to receive the Martha Farrell Award. The valley is a beautiful place, but the women here have never been able to appreciate this beauty due to the turmoil within from generations of unfortunate subjugation. And I have only just scratched the surface in making them and people aware about the importance of being equal. This Award will only make my resolve stronger to work towards this cause with even more conviction.

The Best Organization for Gender Equality category has been won by the Maharashtra based Resource and Support Centre for Development (RSCD) for sustained efforts towards promoting inclusion of women in political processes across 30 districts of Maharashtra and in developing gender sensitivity in its workplace. Established in 1994, RSCD’s vision is to promote a society with equal and appropriate opportunities for the deprived sections, so that they may live a life with dignity, justice & freedom. They started the Mahila Rajsatta Andolan (MRA) in 2000, and have since seen increased women’s participation in local governance structures. The Centre’s mission for strengthened women’s leadership is seen in its organizational practices as well. Senior leadership & district teams are women-only teams. Male staffers reflect on their experiences of caregiving responsibilities at home and encourage their wives and other female family members to participate in local political activities, contest local elections, ensuring joint property ownership, etc. RSCD’s work reflects Dr. Farrell’s commitment to gender mainstreaming within organizations and reiterates her mantra of ‘The Personal is the Political’.
Rizwan Adatia, Founder of Rizwan Adatia Foundation, said, “Both Nadia & the RSCD exemplify the intent behind the Martha Farrell Awards. Strong individuals and groups, who are undeterred in their paths to promote gender equality and awareness. Both Nadia & the RSCD should be emulated across the country, so that women’s empowerment moves from being just a catchphrase to a reality.”
Dr Rajesh Tandon, Founder-President, PRIA, who co-sponsor the Award, said, “The current scenario, perhaps more than ever, calls for active engagement with women’s empowerment. Martha Farrell Awards are proof of the different ways in which we can collectively work towards a gender equitable society”.
A total of 147 nominations were received across both categories this year, which were carefully reviewed for merit by an eight-member jury comprising eminent jurists, women’s rights proponents, film makers, social activists, and media entrepreneurs.

India’s Affordable Housing Finance Landscape
According to India Ratings as of June 2017, the AUM of the affordable housing sector was around Rs 1.5 trillion and is expected to increase four times to Rs 6 trillion by FY22. An overall positivity propelled by a combination of factors, is expected to push growth in the housing finance industry over the long term. Increased government support to developers as well as buyers augurs well for the industry.
The Real Estate Regulation Act (RERA) has significantly boosted transparency to infuse more dynamism into the sector. The government’s efforts to incentivise the housing finance industry, coupled with greater transparency in the sector, continues to provide an upward thrust to the housing finance market, with CRISIL Research forecasting finance penetration in urban areas to increase between FY 2016-17 and FY 2021-22.
Amongst the government initiatives expected to steer industry growth are the credit-linked subsidy scheme (in terms of interest rate subsidy, under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), and grant of infra status to affordable housing.  The government is continuously strengthening its focus on its ‘Housing for All by 2020’ Mission, with the Union Budget for FY2017-18 once again allocating a sizeable corpus for the same. The government’s decision to establish a dedicated affordable housing fund in the National Housing Bank (NHB) through various funding measures is another positive development.
The RBI is also contributing to the industry’s positive outlook with a series of measures, as announced in its June 2017 Monetary Policy. These include reduction in standard assets provisioning, conditional relaxation of risk-weights, singular taxation structure of Goods & Services Tax and loan-to-value (LTV) ratios. Other favourable factors for businesses are the waning impact of demonetisation, low interest rates and rising income levels, coupled with government and RBI initiatives to support growth. The retail housing finance outstanding loan portfolio is projected to expand at 18-20% CAGR, from Rs. 14.3 trillion in FY 2016-17 to Rs. 33.5 trillion in FY 2021-22.

Mumbai, April 30, 2018

Constantia Flexibles, the world’s fourth largest flexible packaging group, is aiming to double its sales in India within the next five years. This is the result of its recent acquisition of a majority stake in Creative Polypack and its group companies, as well as expansion plans of its existing subsidiary Parikh Packaging.

Through the acquisition, Constantia Flexibles is already India’s third largest flexible packaging group and is expecting to reach the c. 200 million EUR sales mark (INR 1,600 crore) in 2022, through market growth and ongoing investments. The flexible packaging market in India is expected to grow by more than 10 percent in the next five years, driven by the megatrend urbanization and the expansion of the retail sector.

India has become the third largest economy in the world after USA and China, with high single-digit GDP growth, major infrastructure projects in roads and ports, a simplification of the tax system and rising private consumption, especially among the burgeoning middle-class.

Alexander Baumgartner, Constantia Flexibles CEO: “We are proud to be here in India today to announce our ambitious growth plans in the fastest growing flexible packaging market worldwide. Our production footprint allows us to cover the whole of the Indian subcontinent and bring the latest innovative and sustainable packaging solutions to our valued customers.”

Baumgartner was joined at a press conference in Mumbai by Pavan Parikh, Managing Director and founder of Parikh Packaging, B.K.Maheswari Managing Director and founder of Creative Polypack, along with his son Giriraj Maheswari, Joint Managing Director.

Creative Polypack Limited was founded in 1986 and is one of the leading flexible packaging groups in India. It achieved sales of about 75 million EUR in the business year ending March 31, 2018, and currently has about 850 employees at eight production sites in Baddi, Kanpur, Kolkata, Assam and Puducherry, in northern, eastern and southern India.

It manufactures film-based flexible packaging for the food and home & personal care (HPC) industries, as well as paper-based soap wrappers. The company serves the leading domestic and international consumer goods companies in India.

Creative Polypack intends to invest on average 6 million euro per year (INR 50 crore) in new production capacity, as well as other infrastructure, at its Kolkata, Baddi, Kanpur and Puducherry sites, in the coming years. Above all, it plans to double its capacity at the newly-established Assam site.

Before the acquisition of Creative Polypack, Constantia Flexibles was already a leading supplier of film-based flexible packaging for the Indian market since acquiring Parikh Packaging in 2013, which is based in Ahmedabad, western India. It has more than 500 employees and achieved sales of roughly 35 million EUR in 2017, serving the food and HPC industries.

Parikh Packaging is investing a double-digit million euro amount (INR 100 crore) in a new greenfield site in Ahmedabad, which will be home to a polyethylene blown film extruder, high-definition Flexo printing press and laminators that will produce high barrier laminates that can be fully recycled. The extra capacity will come on stream in 2019.

Major FMCGs are demanding the highest level of sustainability for their packaging material and the new investment will help them to comply with upcoming Indian Plastic Waste Management (PWM) regulations that promote only fully recyclable flexible packaging. The investment also fits in well with the Indian government’s campaign Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (SBA) to clean the nation.

Constantia Flexibles is the world’s fourth largest producer of flexible packaging. Based on the guiding principle of ‘People, Passion, Packaging’, some 8,300 employees manufacture tailor-made packaging solutions at 40 sites in 18 countries. Many international companies and local market leaders from the food and pharma industries choose the sustainable and innovative products of Constantia Flexibles. www.cflex.com
